Boy Athletes vs. Girl Athletes
I was a four year starter for my high school. But in my high school, that did not matter because I was not a boy. Our athletic director at our high school coached football and baseball, and always gave the boys the good equipment, the good uniforms, and the good pratice times. He made the people believe that the boy athletes were so much better then the girl athletes. Well the boys football team lost in the first round of playoffs my senior year. The girls field hockey team won the Catholic League Championship and beat all the other teams that the played. The boys lacrosse team won one game during my senior year. The girls lacrosse team also won the Catholic League Championship, and has been the best team in the league for the last seven years. The last example is the boys baseball team who did not make it to the playoffs, while the girls softball team made it to the championship game and lost by one run.
Was it a shame that the AD was that way? Yes. Why didn't you file a complaint? Are you sure the equipment was gender based or the teams? I hate to say it, but football is more popular than field hockey. Too many girls whine and complain that football gets more attention compared to their xc team, but they never look at the boys xc team, or the fact that many colleges no longer have a boys xc team because of Title IX quotas.
ReplyDeleteNext questions - Did you get to play? Did you get to hang banners in the hallway? Somehow you didn't mention the boys that aren't even allowed to play. In Missouri, girls' lax is sanctioned and financed by the schools while the boys have to pay for everything, even paying to rent the fields- oh and the girls get first pick of fields, often taking the fields the boys maintained on their own. The boys are persona non grata, they can't be listed on the school schedules, have flyers announcing games or try outs, etc.
Same with ice hockey...
And don't even try being a boy playing field hockey
Or a boy that interested in science or needs help in English.. have you seen the millions spent on trying to get girls to go to science programs, but they won't let boys come to many?
If you want the perks of the football team - then go play football. If not, just remember it could be worse.
I'm sure my son and his friends would gladly take old uniforms for a chance to play the sports they want and get the same educational opportunities you have.
