Welcome...and initial guidelines...

This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.

Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.

I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.

You should have received an email from me inviting you to become a contributor to this blog. The email was sent Monday afternoon to your official Drexel email address.

From a Veterans' Perspective

The Michigan Citizen and the Chicago Tribune, two web edition papers, wrote compelling articles about Iraq War veterans. The articles, although written in the same tone and just about the same source were similar yet distinct. The Michigan Citizen did seem to try and sway readers to support the troops and not the war while the Chicago Tribune did no such thing.

The Michigan Citizen’s article centers on the conception of the “Winter Soldier” group. The Winter Soldiers are all veterans of the Iraq War who ban together in order to bring the troops home. The group also tries to publicize events that sometimes fall under the medias radar. These events include the deaths of innocent civilians and the not so friendly “friendly fire”. The group has aided in allowing several soldiers

The Chicago Tribune’s article is actually an extended obituary of an Iraq War veteran. The soldier had successfully completed two missions in Iraq, but unfortunately his time away accelerated the crumbling of his marriage. The solider, already relieved of all overseas duties, had signed up for another tour stating that his time in Iraq helped him find his way. Unfortunately the solider died in a car crash before his third tour.

With soldier’s across the United States striving for a way out and a way back in the War in Iraq has meant different things for each solider. Some have found it to be a second home whereas others see it as a hindrance to their relationships with family, friends, and loved ones.
