Welcome...and initial guidelines...

This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.

Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.

I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.

You should have received an email from me inviting you to become a contributor to this blog. The email was sent Monday afternoon to your official Drexel email address.

Iraq Compare and Contrast

The article on Iraq entitled "Three U.S. soldiers killed in Baghdad attacks" from CNN basically summarized the rocket attack that occurred in Baghdad. 31 U.S soldiers wounded and others were killed. The first attack happened on the International Zone also known as the Green Zone. In this attack 15 were wounded and 2 soldiers were killed. Minutes earlier at an outpost in southeast Bagdad 1 soldier was wounded was killed and 14 others were wounded. Later in the essay CNN also includes that there was an exclusive interview with a Al-Maliki spokesperson. There article therefore was packed with other information that did not really pertain to the killing in Baghdad. This CNN exclusive interview included information about a kidnapping of 42 college students, they were seized and threatened. The college students were held up on the bus on their way to school. One bus managed to escape. Four students on the bus, however, were wounded by gunfire. Luckily, the other students were later released.

In contrast to CNN article, FOX news article on the same event entitled "3 U.S Soldiers Killed in Baghdad Attacks" was straight to the point. This article was short, concise, and straight to the point. It merely stated that 31 soldiers were wounded at the Green Zone when rockets struck in central Baghdad.

Unlike CNN, FOX article mainly focused on that main event. Since CNN decided to include more facts about the kidnappings and other killings that were irrelevant to the rocket attack that occurred 3 o'clock today it made it seem that they were trying to exacerbate the issue, and make it seem more horrible than it really way. They seemingly tried to portray the Iraqi forces as even more barbaric as CNN included more facts about the horrible crimes they were committing against U.S forces. CNN article seemed gave more overwhelming facts and kind of made you even more bitter towards Iraq militia than FOX since FOX only contained straight facts and numbers.
