My first media coverage report consisted of a CNN report where our President and Commander in Chief George Bush talking about how the major combat operations in Iraq have ended but that was only but one victory in the war on terror. Our president was addressing the military from the USS Abraham Lincoln, an nuclear aircraft carrier, with a banner that read "mission accomplished". The president comes forth by saying the major things have been accomplished but their is still some difficult work ahead to ensure freedom for the Iraqi people. Basically part of the reason why our country is still in Iraq is to find and locate more members of Saddam's regime and allow the Iraqi people to set up and bring forth their government so that they can be independent.

While the article from CNN focuses more on word from our President and Commander and Chief, this next online magazine article focuses more on the words of veterans and troops. This article talks alot about the Winter soldiers and gives a variety of opinions and stories from different veterans and soldiers. These stories are against the war and are all about different war crimes that were committed and how harsh and inhumane these crimes were. One soldier talks about how he was given an order from his captain that their were no friendlies or civilians in the area. So they unleashed and all out assault on whatever they saw which resulted in the killing of innocent iraqis. He explains that the people who were killed had no weapons or anything and some were women and children. This is just one of the couple different stories in this article.

These two articles contrast very nicely because you get the words from your president and the media coverage of nothing but happy things and accomplishment so far. Then we see how the second article is nothing like the happy easy go speech. In the second you see the reflection and view from the soldiers at war and how bad things really are. Bush praises the military for a job well done but continues to be pro-war, explaining why we still need to be over there in Iraq, and on the other hand the veterans bring the anti-war view after some of their experiences.
Welcome...and initial guidelines...
This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.
Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.
I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.
You should have received an email from me inviting you to become a contributor to this blog. The email was sent Monday afternoon to your official Drexel email address.
