Welcome...and initial guidelines...

This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.

Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.

I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.

You should have received an email from me inviting you to become a contributor to this blog. The email was sent Monday afternoon to your official Drexel email address.

My Neutral Stance

Due to my religious convictions I remain neutral in political affairs; be it voting or warfare. It is difficult, however as a resident of the United States of America to not have an opinion on the war transpiring in Iraq.
At the war's commencement I question whether the war was more about Bush getting back at Saddam Hussein for personal vendetta's (the way Bush Sr. was made a mockery of by Hussein) and control of one of the most lucrative resources in the world (oil) - or if Iraq indeed played a role in the United States' fight against terrorism. I remember discussions in my english and history classes in particular where current events were discussed, there was much concern about what Iraq had to do with terrorism - many of my collegues shared the sentiment that it should not be of US concern whether or not Iraq had weapons of mass destruction or not - what does that have to do with our search for Osama Bin Laden. For many of us it seemed like the United States government was losing focus - what was this war about. It seemed that such TV networks as ABC, CBS, and CNN discussed early-on that this war had some relevance, it was in some way valid to a fight against terrorism. Contrastingly though, as time has marched on such comedic political programs as The Colbert Report have exposed the "secret" belief or concern of many Americans that Iraq is not a war we should be fighting - between the incompetence of George Bush, exponentially increasing American deaths suffered in Iraq, as well as the resistance of Iraqi's towards US control it appears we should never have even gotten involved, especially since Iraq has little to do with the terroristic acts of September 11th. Additionally, I always harbored the belief that the United States' involvement in Iraq was simply a ploy for Bush to distract the American people from his inability to capture the ellusive Bin Laden - one man who made a mockery a world power's central intelligence agency.
As a business student I find it essential to know what is going on in the world and how wars such as the current war in Iraq effect economies the world over. However, as I stated at the outset - I remain neutral, not giving my allegience to any establishment or power other than Jehovah God as I know it is only his righteous kingdom (headed by Christ Jesus) that is to come that can eradicate the wickedness of this world in turmoil.
