When I first encountered this blog, the first thing I thought about was what concerns us currently. Rises in gas and oil prices, inflation, America’s conflict with other countries (i.e. keeping the title of world monopoly), and technology. From this I noticed that all these problems arise due to the rapid advancements we are making today. Then I chose to look back 50 years. The Supreme Court rules that integration is vital for the growth of children and schools. This brings on many other firsts for African Americans in the workforce. Truman Capote writes what will soon become a major film, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, following clueless Holly Golightly around her day to day life. NASA is created. To me, all of these events introduce new ideas in American society. Space exploration, which was once a dream, becomes a true reality. Never before were African Americans truly equal (in writing). As an avid Audrey Hepburn lover, I feel that Breakfast at Tiffany’s exposes a side that many people would love to feel. To not have to worry about the major news and just stay in the present. Ms. Golightly embodies a persona many people desired to adopt yet couldn’t because of the harsh realities that were actually occurring.
Is it safe to say that advancements bring on insecurities? With technology, there is more to worry about in the future than staying in the present. Perhaps it is not necessarily war that makes a person weary, but the idea that life could change greatly at such a fast pace. For those living in Nazi Germany life turned so quickly for the worse with little time to prepare. Japanese Concentration Camps in America unfairly took prisoners in the wake of Pearl Harbor. One minute life as a family, the next, life is constrained.
Wars, depressions, and triumph – all these events that happen in our history are confusing. However, I feel it is the threat that our lives could change in the blink of an eye due to the rapid advancement in technology that worries our counterparts. It would be easy to pretend it all wasn’t occurring or did not matter such as Holly Golightly did, but truthfully, it is our lives on the line. One only can sit back so much before the reality sets in.
Welcome...and initial guidelines...
This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.
Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.
I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.
You should have received an email from me inviting you to become a contributor to this blog. The email was sent Monday afternoon to your official Drexel email address.
