Welcome...and initial guidelines...

This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.

Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.

I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.

You should have received an email from me inviting you to become a contributor to this blog. The email was sent Monday afternoon to your official Drexel email address.

TWO ARTICLES

The First article, Three U.S. soldiers killed in Baghdad attacks, is about the recent deaths in Iraq. It’s also goes on to talk about the other incidents that where going on. The most recent was a rocket attack on the U.S in a green zone. Three men died and 31 people were wounded. The article also ties the political aspects of the war and updates the public on the activities of the Bush Administration. The main point is to draw people in by talking about the death toll and then informing the reader to try and understand more. There are not many hard facts and doesn't really go too in depth with information. It contrasts from the next article which is a scholarly article with facts and neutral information about Iraq and the news going one, they come from different origins and differ in style of what information and sources are present.
The second article, Bush Calls a Peace Conference While Stoking a Wider War, has a different spin on the war in Iraq. It looks at the political side of the war and looking to the bigger picture. The article goes into meeting that the Bush Administration has been setting up. This is all for a peace agreement. It also talks about the fighting between some Middle Eastern countries. The facts and sources are citied and the information is credible.
The articles in the news need to start telling the public the truth about the war. We need credible info that can help inform the American public. We need to have more positive stories that report if the U.S is influencing a positive effect. News cannot be so bias and always reporting death for a front cover money making article. I feel it is influencing the American society to have such an ill-informed view.
