Welcome...and initial guidelines...

This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.

Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.

I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.

You should have received an email from me inviting you to become a contributor to this blog. The email was sent Monday afternoon to your official Drexel email address.

Articles about Iraq.

The first article that I read was from the ABC news website about the rocket attacks in Baghdad that killed 3 U.S. troops and wounded 31 others. This article spoke only a little about the actual event taking place, later moving on to discuss what the U.S. was doing in order to keep control of the territory that they have gained. It also goes on about past events that have taken place over in Iraq, such as the 42 students that were taken off of a bus by gunmen, and what Iraqi leaders are planning for the future, such as the anti-U.S. demontration "a million strong" that Al-Sadr is organizing which will protest the fifth anniversary of the fall of Iraq.

The second article was from MSNBC, also about the rocket attacks in Baghdad. This article was more focused on what happened during this, but also goes on to talk about the violence occuring in Sadr City. Both articles seemed to be written in pretty much the same way, sometimes it seemed like they were the same article altogether. They both spoke of the number of deaths that have occured since the war started, and also of the horrible conditions in which people are living over there.
