In contrast to this article the second one I read was an editorial in the Washington Post also about the battle of Basra. The difference in this article however was that it kept a some what positive tone despite the failure in the battle. "Iraqi and U.S fatalities in March were one-third to one-half of what they were a year ago". This article also stated that the balance of power in the city is "unclear" and that the victory claimed was "premature". By using these words the article allows the reader to feel some sort of hope or redemption in what in reality was a total failure. The article itself ends on a positive not as well. "But the fact that an Iraqi government commonly described as impotent and inert now is willing and able to fight Shiite militias is a step in the right direction". These two article are a clear illustration of the bias and one sided approach that most article will take when describing an event.
Welcome...and initial guidelines...
This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.
Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.
I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.

Battle for Basra
The first article I read was an opinion article from Yahoo News about the battle of Basra. The article summed up the battle that took place in Basra with a sarcastically negative tone. Comparing it with shay's rebellion which took place here in the U.S the article states, "It can serve as a wake-up call for strong government and an end to militias capable of insurrection". The article goes on to say, "'We are fast verging toward anarchy and confusion', wrote an alarmed George Washington, who came out of retirement to help created the Constitution and become president. By placing George Washington's quote in this article we can see how it can be applied to todays war in Iraq. The article ends with a rather bleak statement condemning the future Iraq and the U.S troops there. "President Bush said last week that the battle was a defining moment in the history of a free Iraq. It probably was. Now he and others must define the future for a less-than-free Iraq, and how much longer U.S forces must stay".
