Welcome...and initial guidelines...

This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.

Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.

I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.

You should have received an email from me inviting you to become a contributor to this blog. The email was sent Monday afternoon to your official Drexel email address.

Blog 2a

First Article: Public Attitudes towards the war in Iraq
Source: http://pewresearch.org/pubs/770/iraq-war-five-year-anniversary
This article basically shows statistics from national survey on the Iraq War. Statistically, public who are for Iraq was is increasing. Couple years ago, 38% were of the US public was for Iraq war. Currently, approximately 49% of the US public is for Iraq War. Public want our troops to stay in Iraq until the situation in Iraq stabilizes. However, people still haven't changed their opinion going in war with Iraq in first place.
In this article the statistics are based on pew research center.

Second Article: Monthly cost of Iraq, Afghan wars approach that of Vietnam
Source: http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/iraq/2003-09-07-cover-costs_x.htm
This article mainly focuses money spent in Iraq war and future money to be spent on the Iraq war. The Pentagon is spending about 5 billions dollar a month on Iraq and Afghanistan. The lost that could reach total of 60 billion dollars. Bush has also asked for another 87 billion dollar from congress regarding war in Iraq for next year. All of these cost have also threatened other programs to close. There have also been extra money spend on reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan. Basically, we are spending so much amount of money on war and that is affecting our economy.
This news is from USA Today.
Personally, I thought that the second article was a little biased. It talked about how much money we spend on war in Iraq as extremely bad. It gave all the negatives on that. After all, why are we spending so much money? What is our purpose? I mean there has to be a reason we are doing this. The Second article sort of takes side on war in Iraq.
