Welcome...and initial guidelines...

This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.

Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.

I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.

You should have received an email from me inviting you to become a contributor to this blog. The email was sent Monday afternoon to your official Drexel email address.

What has Iraq Brought us to?

I read two very interesting media reports about the war and what exactly we are to do about it. The first article stemmed from a Washington Talk Radio News Service that basically summed up General Petraeus' address to the Senate and what exactly we were to do about this war. Of course Hillary Clinton and John McCain were there to show their support and also give some insight for their ongoing presidential battle. Basically General Petraeus spoke a bunch about how "battlefield calculus" is being used to analyze if we are to bring home troops or if we are going to have to stay in Iraq. Now of course there are very many different opinions to this, basically outlined by Clinton and McCain's views. Clinton talked a lot about how we had to start looking at the withdrawal of our troops, and McCain praised the surge of our troops and the success we have.
Now the other article I read was a blog about the statements made in Petraeus' address and there was a spin. The contrast came in what Hillary was actually saying. The blog stated how Hilliary thought the war was lost, how McCain wants to stay, and how Obama is cautious.

My main problem with the blog is that it spins a few words in Hillary's case and also comments about Obama, who wasn't even at the address to the senate. Now the blog followed with stating something that Bill O'Reilly had said "The loons on the left and many in the corrupt media are lying to you! There is danger ahead. Running away from it will hurt you and your family."

Now Hillary never said much about running away, and Obama said nothing at all, yet this liberal spin is making Hillary out to be a target, while also making O'Reilly sound like a fool. Normally I wouldn't mind this, but I think the effort for support on the democratic side doesn't need to be attacking a Republican "fool". Rather I would say to do things the right way and stop making our presidential candidates to be targets. Instead, make them seem intelligible support what they say, it never looks good when you try and bash the other side.

It's actually quite hard to find any media coverage on the war without a presidential bias on either side. Disappointing.

When General Petraeus talks about "battlefield calculus"...if I'm interpreting this right...is he comparing war to math?

People don't really work like math equations, so I'm not sure how much "calculus" can be used when figuring out a solution for Iraq.
