I hate scary movies. I am scared of all of them. But after reading the Saw Horror article, it made a lot of sense why kids like movies in particular. Movies take people from their normal lives of people dealing with war, post September 11th, and other things. For the couple of hours they don't have to worry about anything and just can see the world from a different point of view.
I decided to write about a movie that has given hope to the people that have watched it and they people that have lived through it. Remember the Titans (2000) is a movie about a small town in Virgina in the year of 1971. At that time in Virgina, schools have been segregated but during the movie one of the white schools is closed , and all the white students have to join the black students at T.C. Williams High School. Bill Yoast, played by Will Paton, starts out by being deprived of the football head coach position at TC Williams because it is given to black coach Herman Boone, played by Denzel Washington. And as Yoast tries to go elsewhere, the white players say that they won't play unless Yoast stays. So Yoast decides to work as the assitant to Boone. They work together to change the boys hate for each other to respect for each other. Which soon turns into trust for each other, and turns into the boys teaching the town "how to trust the soul of a person". The team's trust earns them a chance for the State Championship until unthinkable tragedy hits the Titans by sidelining star player Gerry Bertier, played Ryan Hurst. The Titan's hard work and dedication pays off in the end with a perfect season, state championship, and lessons that stayed with them for a lifetime.
Welcome...and initial guidelines...
This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.
Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.
I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.
