Welcome...and initial guidelines...

This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.

Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.

I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.

You should have received an email from me inviting you to become a contributor to this blog. The email was sent Monday afternoon to your official Drexel email address.

Who is legend???

In today's society, there is so much talk about the war. Because of this, combined with the fact that this class is based on the question "Why are we in Iraq?" I figured I'd pick a movie that has roots tied into the war in Iraq. The movie I want to discuss is called "I am Legend." "I am Legend" is a movie that was released this past winter starring a well known actor, from West Philadelphia, Will Smith.

Upon mentioning this movie and the war in Iraq, most people would not see a true connection between the two. However, after looking into the movie more deeply, it is clear that the movie shows many similarities to the current situation the United States faces in Iraq. In the movie, Will Smith's character tries to save the world after the cure for cancer turned drastically wrong leading to a serious and deadly infection killing most of the population. Will Smith is now the only survivor left in New York city, which was quarantined upon the start of the infection.

The similarities start with Will Smith's character. I compare this character to president George Bush. In my eyes, Bush seems to have taken the role of curing the world from all evil nations. He seem to be the leader in the fight against terror and continues to fight against those who are evil. This characteristic I find admiring in both Smith's character and Bush because it is essential that people must take a stand against evil. Another similarity is that Smith's character is the only survivor in New York fighting the infection, the only person looking for a cure. In a way, I see this to again symbolize Bush. With his extremely low approval rating combined with the fact that many other countries have distanced themselves from the U.S., I believe Bush can be considered the only remaining survivor fighting terrorism. I do not mean this literally because Bush is obviously not the ONLY person in the world against terrorism, however, for sake of argument, I believe that the way Bush has gone about the fight against terrorism has made him the only one left fighting it by those means.

The final similarity I find is the overall cause. In the movie, the infection was caused by one lady finding a cure for cancer. Therefore, in the overall sense of trying to cure cancer, she was try to gain ultimate power over the body and over health. Just as she was using medicine to overpower cancer, people in the world are trying to use nuclear weapons to overpower the world. They are trying to conquer the world by means of weapons. In both cases, neither can be conquered. Health nor the world will ever be totally conquerable, yet people will always continue to try and bad things will always come as a result, just as they did in "I am Legend" and in the war in Iraq.
