In a quote from BBC News, President George Bush said these following words in November of 2003, "Iraqi democracy will succeed- and that success will send forth news...that freedom can be the future of every nation." These words obviously show that the U.S. government had one goal in mind before going to war in Iraq and that was to establish liberty in Iraq and use Iraq as a model of liberty for all other surrounding countries. Yet, five years after beginning war, little progress has been made and the Bush administration has not only failed the American people, but also the rest of mankind.
In an article by BBC News titled "Toxic world fallout from Iraq invasion", the detriments of the war are clearly shown. According to the article, the United States has separated itself from the rest of the world in their quest to bring freedom to Iraq. U.S. relations with other countries has suffered tremendously, with the U.S. alienating two of its strongest allies - France and Germany. Overall, the war has had an extremely negative effect on the United States.
In a similar article by CNN titled "Battlefield Breakdown: The full price of war in Iraq", more negative effects are shown. In this article, it is shown that the U.S. is sending untrained soldiers into war. For example, the article mentions a soldier by the name of Sgt. Chris Tucker. Tucker and his unit were trained to operate military tanks, however, upon deployment his unit was reassigned to use Humvees and preform tasks that they were not fully trained for. It is clear that the United States government has lost total control of this war and they are now forced to take all types of means to catch up.
Overall, the two articles convey a similar message. The U.S. went to war to bring liberty to the world, however, their plan of action has failed them and because of this, they have failed "us", being the American people. The two articles are different, one coming from an American source and the other coming from a British source. However, despite where one may be geographically located, it is quite clear that the war in Iraq is not heading in the right direction for the United States of America.

Welcome...and initial guidelines...
This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.
Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.
I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.
You should have received an email from me inviting you to become a contributor to this blog. The email was sent Monday afternoon to your official Drexel email address.
