Welcome...and initial guidelines...

This blog will be used in the spring of 2008 by 80+ students at Drexel University to investigate the effects of Iraq on culture and the reverse. Our goal will be to better understand why the US is in Iraq, and to question whether literature can help us on this journey.

Weekly plans and other materials will always be posted in Vista, not this blog. So go to Bb Vista to get the discussion prompts and other instructions.

I intend this blog to manage our discussions and track our collective investigation.

You should have received an email from me inviting you to become a contributor to this blog. The email was sent Monday afternoon to your official Drexel email address.

To Hell With Your Induced Creativity

Something that I see a lot of music majors and people that have to write scripts and stories say that they need drugs (usually pot, acid, and related others) to be creative. They tell me that it opens up their mind and it puts the words into their mouths. And it's not like they're making this up as an excuse to get high, they truly believe that they would be lost and stupified without this magic substances. This has to be some form of laziness or ignorance. That's like saying you need adderal/speed/coke to get your work done. You don't need a goddamn thing. The main problem I have is not that I think that this is going to ruin their lives. No, I know a lot of people that use responsibly and have great lives. What I have a problem with is that instead of having discipline and working a little extra to produce something sober, they give up and reach for the bottle. It's just looking for the easy button, the quickest and painless way out. This only breeds weak people.

To hell with your close-minded prude bullshit.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

Artists, musicians, genuises, and world leaders throughout history have used drugs, not because they NEED them to be creative/brilliant, but because it CHALLENGES you to see the world in a different way. Different drugs tap certain parts of your brain that you would never use, it expands your mind and thought process. When you are tripping, you still have perfect muscle memory and can play instruments as well as you normally do but can add many different layers of depth that you could not reach without being in that state. You have no idea what I am talking about because you are not willing to accept this information because you have not experienced, but that is only your loss. It is not a quick and painless way out, it is opposite of that. It is long and intense, testing the strength of those under the drugs. And once you come out of it, you are a stronger person. "This has to be some form of laziness or ignorance." GREAT people from history have experimented with many drugs because they are not ignorant to the fact that our bodies are unstoppable and the mind can take you anywhere you want to go.
